Shopify Product Tags

Shopify product tags are flexible labels you attach to products to categorize, filter, and organize them. Tags are free-form text strings — you can create any tag you like, such as 'summer', 'bestseller', 'eco-friendly', or 'gift-under-50'. They serve multiple purposes: powering smart collection conditions, enabling storefront filtering, supporting internal search, and organizing your admin product list. The challenge with tags is that they're unstructured. Without a consistent tagging strategy, stores quickly accumulate duplicate and near-duplicate tags ('Summer', 'summer', 'Summer 2025', 'summer-collection') that fragment their collection logic. A well-designed tagging taxonomy is the backbone of effective automated collection management. Tags should follow consistent naming conventions, cover key attributes (season, style, material, occasion, price tier), and be regularly audited for duplicates. Tags also have limits: Shopify allows up to 250 tags per product and recommends keeping individual tags under 255 characters. For large catalogs, the total number of unique tags can impact admin search performance. Metafields offer a more structured alternative for complex product attributes, but tags remain the easiest way to drive smart collection rules and storefront filters.
