Shopify Metafields

Shopify metafields are custom data fields that let merchants store structured information beyond Shopify's default product, collection, variant, and store attributes. While tags are free-form labels, metafields are typed key-value pairs with defined namespaces and data types (text, number, URL, date, JSON, etc.). This makes them ideal for storing detailed product specifications, custom collection metadata, SEO attributes, and integration data. For collection management, metafields unlock powerful capabilities. You can store collection-level metadata like target audience, seasonal dates, or priority scores that inform automation logic. On the product side, metafields can hold attributes like material composition, sustainability ratings, or fit guides that drive more sophisticated collection rules than basic tags allow. Shopify's Online Store 2.0 themes can render metafield data directly on storefront pages. Metafields require more setup than tags — you need to define metafield definitions with namespaces, keys, and types — but they reward that effort with reliable, structured data. They're especially valuable for stores with complex catalogs where attributes like 'thread count', 'voltage', or 'age range' determine which collection a product belongs in.
