Manual Collections (Shopify)

Manual collections in Shopify are product groupings where each item is explicitly selected and added by the store owner or merchandiser. Unlike Smart Collections that use condition-based rules, manual collections give you complete control over exactly which products appear and in what order. This makes them ideal for curated selections like gift guides, editor's picks, limited-edition drops, and brand storytelling pages where the precise mix of products matters. The primary advantage of manual collections is editorial precision. You choose the exact products, arrange them in a deliberate order, and craft a specific shopping narrative. The downside is maintenance: when products sell out, go out of season, or are discontinued, someone must manually remove them. For stores with hundreds of products and dozens of collections, this manual upkeep becomes a full-time job. The bigger the catalog, the more likely manual collections become stale, filled with out-of-stock items and outdated picks. Many successful merchants use a hybrid approach: manual collections for high-value curated pages and smart collections for broad category pages. The key is ensuring that even hand-picked collections get regular maintenance to remove unavailable products and refresh the selection.
