Collection Hierarchy

Collection hierarchy refers to the nested, tree-like structure that organizes collections from broad parent categories down to specific subcategories. For example, 'Clothing' (parent) contains 'Women's Clothing' (child), which contains 'Dresses' (grandchild), which contains 'Maxi Dresses' (great-grandchild). This hierarchy mirrors how customers naturally narrow their search and powers your store's navigation. Shopify doesn't natively support parent-child collection relationships — every collection is flat and independent. Merchants create the appearance of hierarchy through navigation menus, collection linking, and naming conventions (e.g., 'Women's > Dresses > Maxi Dresses'). This lack of native hierarchy is one of Shopify's biggest collection management limitations, requiring manual coordination to maintain the illusion of structure. A well-designed collection hierarchy balances depth and breadth. Too flat (all collections at one level) makes browsing overwhelming. Too deep (five levels of nesting) makes navigation tedious. Most successful stores use 2-3 levels for their main hierarchy, supplemented by cross-cutting collections (seasonal, lifestyle, price-based) that don't fit the hierarchical tree.
