Variant Management

Variant management is the discipline of handling individual product variants — specific size, color, material, or style combinations — across your entire e-commerce operation. A single 'Classic T-Shirt' product might have 30 variants (5 colors x 6 sizes), each with its own inventory level, SKU, and availability status. Proper variant management ensures that collection decisions account for variant-level availability, not just parent product status. This is critical for collection quality. A product might show as 'in stock' at the parent level because one variant has inventory, even though 29 of 30 variants are sold out. Showing that product prominently in a collection frustrates shoppers who find their size or color unavailable. Variant-level management means a product only appears in size-sensitive collections when popular variants are available, not just when any single variant has stock. Shopify supports up to 100 variants per product (3 option types with up to 100 combinations). Managing variants at scale requires tracking inventory across all variants and locations, understanding which variants drive the most sales, and making collection decisions based on variant availability rather than simple in/out-of-stock binary status at the product level.
